Happy Wednesday! I hope all of your weeks are going well so far 🙂 The only thing I don’t like about my week is the snow but I mean it is still winter technically so it will snow LOL!
I think all of you know that I’m a therapist right? Well every Tuesday I run a eating disorder/body image group here at work. Yesterday we watched a short video created by Dove that I love. It’s on YouTube and I will post a link here.
The idea of the video is that several women are asked to describe themselves to a FBI sketch artist (he doesn’t actually ever see them, he is behind a curtain facing away from them) and he sketches them based on their description of themselves; he then sketches another view of them from a stranger that has spent (15 minutes?) talking to them. Watch the video, it’s amazing!
We spent time in group discussing how our own perspective of ourselves is distorted and I think this happens with every day people. I had a co worker remark to me yesterday, “That’s such a cute outfit, you always dress so cute. I don’t think I could ever dress like that” (or something similar, maybe I don’t remember her exact words) and I disagree. I think we sometimes get too worried about what other people will think (based on our own distorted perspective). Case in point: One day I wore two prints (it was last summer and I just jumped on the mixing prints trend) and I previously planned to wear two coordinated prints but one day I wore a different bottom with the printed top (they didn’t actually match) but I didn’t realize it until I got my pajamas on that night. It was odd when I realized I had been all day without matching…no one said anything and I didn’t realize the patterns were off…SO DOES IT REALLY MATTER IF I DON’T CARE?? This is my question….if you don’t worry about it, does it matter? I think we can apply this to any area.
Does anyone notice the back of my hair where two curls leave a gap? Does anyone notice the zit I covered on my face? Does anyone notice if my hair isn’t washed today? Does anyone notice that I think I’ve gained weight? Does anyone notice what size I wear? Does anyone notice I haven’t exercised for days? Does anyone notice I didn’t shower today?Does anyone care about my age or wrinkles? Does anyone notice my eyebrows aren’t the same? Does anyone notice I have a big head and most hats don’t fit my head? (No one notices, no one cares)
I challenge each of you to wear something you didn’t think you could, to be yourself, to speak up, to challenge the thoughts you have about yourself and be more gentle 🙂 Watch the video and change your perspective!
Dove Real Beauty Sketch Artist
So hubs and I spent most of our Saturday helping my daughter get her house ready to sell. They had cleaning and wall repairs needed to be done and many hands make light work right??
I got home, dressed in clean clothes and put my eyebrows on (LOL) and then got groceries (I wore almost all gray to match the snow, I’m sort of in mourning cause it seems like winter is starting all over again UG)…then….
So I just got home and hubs is laying on his reclined chair; (we put groceries away) I’m laying on the reclined couch and he’s watching Big Bang Theory on DVR…and he’s sound asleep (so I guess not really watching it LOL) and we hit commercials….and here I am -awake obviously but I don’t have enough energy, desire, or motivation to get up and get the remote!
I’m in a terrible dilemma….so I sit here and flippin watch commercials until he stirs when Big Bang ends…LOL Oi!
I’m so smart! I suggested we put a movie (Batman Begins-I totally have a thing for Christian Bale) in the DVD player cause then I can continue to sit and relax without worrying if he’s gonna wake up to skip commercials! Life is a challenge right and I totally have all the answers!! Bahahahaha!
So I’ve been really happy the last few months because red is such a hot color! I mean “hot” fashion wise, like it’s a new color previously undiscovered! It seems like there is red everywhere which is really good for me because I’ve always loved red and it’s a flattering color for my skin tone/hair.
I’ve had red pants for years…and just now (since it’s in vogue) I’ve got a red bag, red boots, red faux fur coat, red sunglasses…seriously I’m in heaven. What else red can I snag before it’s not in???
I really love red. This makes me think of something else I love…About 14 years ago I got a distressed (holey and embellished) pair of capri length jeans that I saved and saved money for (got them at Dillards). They went out of style about a year after that, but I saved them and now poof! They’re totally in! I was rewarded for my loyalty.
What do you love that has gone in and out of style before you’re ready? What do you hope stays in style for awhile??
I am finally feeling a bit better! Yay! I seriously have to consider getting the flu shot this coming fall, that hit me real bad…hope it doesn’t ever happen again!
I got to wear the pretty red/pink sweater that I got from Target awhile ago! I originally got this sweater to wear with a floral black/pink/red skirt but I have to wear it with other things right?? An item of clothing needs to be flexible to work in many different ensembles! I love this sweater because it striped, combines hot red/pink, and has some real pretty ruffles on the shoulder which makes it unique.
So I had to wear it today, but wanted to use some creativity in putting an outfit together…(black pants would be too simple right??) So I paired with my pink Express fitted jeans, my black OTK suede boots, and then in a moment of impulsivity grabbed my Desuigal bag (pink, red, camo, black-remember I snagged it at the Dallas airport in a frenzied moment between flights?? I felt so accomplished to find something so darling at such a random time and 40% off)-Score!
I have so much fun wearing something that’s a little out of the ordinary and it helps to make up for my still constant headache….(I’m sure it will eventually go away)…
Later today after work I got my hair done courtesy of my talented niece Bronwyn at Suggestions Salon in Orem Utah. While waiting for the dye to cure (?) I leafed through some magazines and saw some real fun and creative (styles) to combine for some interesting outfits. I love discovering new inspiration for clothes, it’s just really fun and then my brain starts whirring through all my clothes trying to figure out new creations to showcase my personality. Don’t you think each of our own fashion choices should give a clue to our personality? No matter a person’s age, I think yes is the correct answer! After a nice wash and scalp massage (maybe this is key to de-stress?), I realized my headache was gone, so that is such a blessing that I don’t even have a headache anymore or wobegone roots! What a great way to end my day! Have a happy Tuesday night/hump day tomorrow! We are halfway through the week!! (I added a link to this gorgeous sweater)!
Women’s Striped 3/4 Sleeve Shoulder Frill Crew
So I’m still not feeling well and had this idea that it might be good to get out and get some fresh air…I thought maybe the sunshine and fresh air would help me feel better as laying on a couch has NOT LOL..
So I drove to Target which usually has an invigorating effect (I thought walking around would give me some energy, seriously this is the worse flu I have ever experienced-my head and eye socket still hurt-probably TMI). Even though my plan did not help, I found some wonderful items at Target! and quickly came home to lay back down (of course).
I found a darling pair of black/white checked flats with bows that were on clearance, which will go so cute with this green, black/white floral patterned dress. I also tried on a long lavender cardigan (so spring) and a striped pink button up shirt and some pearl studded jeans (also on clearance). I found some great fashion deals, tried out my fresh air experiment, and got some sunshine; although still feel poorly. (Back at home, watching Sherlock Holmes-Robert Downey Jr/Jude Law style-gotta love Guy Ritchie).
I recommend each of you run to Target, even if you feel ill. They have some great deals, check out the clearance aisles in shoes and clothes!
So since I’ve been sick, I’ve been entertaining myself with every disaster movie I own- Titanic, 2012, Day After Tomorrow, Poseidon (I saw the original I think in 1974 with my mom and Dad; Michelle and Kami were visiting their dad in California and we went to the movies-granted it was two years after release, but that was normal for our part of Wyoming). LOL
I’ve watched all the Twilight movies (my son Connor watched the war scene at the end last night, then realized “wait that wasn’t real??WTF!!” ha ha I know, crazy huh), all the Bourne movies (which are really good BTW, we watched Bourne Legacy last night) and I got this crazy idea promoted by Jason Bourne….what if I was a secret agent? I’m undercover for AMAZING OLDER WOMEN COMPANY working for (some elite design company) trying to uncover a sadistic plot to keep older women out of the fashion scene. Several executives found out my real identity and have secretly given me “green pills” that cause a terrible virus and super accelerated aging that will keep me from exposing their terrible truth (Thus the reason I am sick)! But I will not be thwarted! I will live! I will survive this awful virus (this will make a great movie right??) Let me know if you’re interested in the rights 😉
(these are the odd things I think while stuck on my couch sick watching every movie ever made) LOL oh and Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! (I did get dressed- see my pink and floral pants below-but that took too much energy and effort so I’m laying back down)
So since I’ve been sick, I’ve been watching a lot of movies. Usually when I’m sick, I watch a lot of Jane Austen…but this time I seem to be hooked on disaster movies. Being sick calls for lengthy movies (so one doesn’t have to constantly get up and put another movie in…Jane Austen movies….especially Pride and Prejudice…go on forever! Which I love, I love the period dramas/comedies…they’re so fascinating but also long which is perfect when one is ill) But this time, since I just went on a cruise, I felt a fascination with Titanic and Rose DeWitt Bukater!
She went on a cruise-I went on a cruise…granted her cruise ended differently than mine. I noticed one thing:I am not the biggest high maintenance woman on this planet!
I offer evidence of my claim: here is a picture of me at the airport with our luggage (I have two 50# checked bags and one carry on bag (my husband also has two checked bags, but I’ve put shoes in one of his so I guess you have to count them all) and here are pictures of Rose DeWitt Bukater’s luggage (character played by Kate Winslet) “all the trunks from that car there, 12 from here, and the safe to the parlour suite rooms B52, 54, and 56”-explains Cal’s assistant, that bad guy that’s always harassing Rose and Jack. I don’t have near the same number of bags, of course she had these huge hats and several beaded dresses along with corsets that took a lot of room; but holy cow they had TRUNKS…have you ever seen a trunk? I could’ve got all my clothes in my closet into one trunk…I only had two suitcases and a carryon…who knew I’m a simple woman.
Maybe I need to up my game? I’ll be pondering my simple nature (compared to Rose DeWitt Bukater) while I watch another disaster movie-“2012” which coincidentally also has a cruise ship… maybe the next movie will be “Poseidon”???
